Dartford Farmers Market

What will become of our beloved Dartford Farmers Market and the traders that rely on it?

Dartford Farmers’ Market began in November 2005 at the request of Dartford Borough Council and has graced our highstreet ever since. That is until Covid-19 created havoc throughout the world and everything came to a standstill.

As we all know, businesses are again starting to reopen and for most of them, they can start their road to recovery.

Unfortunately though, this isn’t yet the case for Dartford Farmers Market.

Although the Government announced that from 1st June open air markets could reopen, they also had to abide by the current health and safety restrictions linked with COVID-19. Sadly, with the current restrictions the government has in place for our safety, it means that our local traders have to wait longer than other farmers markets.

Below is a statement written on the Dartford Farmers Market page:

“Due to Dartford Farmers Market being held in the pedestrian High Street with shops either side of the market location and minimum numbers of people being allowed in the shops and queues forming outside it is not possible to open the farmers market at present.

We are in discussions with Dartford Borough Council who are gradually opening the general market on Thursdays and Saturdays. We will be visiting the High Street on general market day to look at the spaces available for the farmers market stalls and then providing a health/safety risk assessment to Dartford Borough Council.”

This is very sad, not just for the traders but for the people of Dartford too. The farmers market offered a community vibe to the town and it is very much missed. As you know, I am all about supporting local businesses and doing my bit to promote Dartford and its surrounding areas. So my heart goes out to everyone that is being affected by these unfortunate events, and I can only hope that things change for the better soon.

There is some good news though. There are several stallholders offering delivery services for their items for customers who attend the farmers market.

I am sure there will be people out there delighted of this news, and it also gives us the opportunity to show some support and continue to shop local.

Here is a list of stallholders that are offering their customers their delivery service:
