How to Help Your Local Community
We have all definitely been on a challenging journey over the last few months. Thankfully, it looks as if we are slowing heading back to some kind of normality. None of us know what this new normal will look like but I can honestly say that whatever happens, doing our bit within our communities will definitely help.
I know for a fact that there are a lot of people out there that have been struggling and I also know there are plenty of individuals who want to play their part in helping others and to restore our streets, neighbourhoods and towns centres.
Well, I have some great news for you, there are a ton of ways in which we can help our communities and spread happiness and kindness to those around us.
Remember, a healthy and cared for community is a happy community
Have a read of my list and see what best works with you, every little bit helps and no matter how small, it all makes a difference and goes a long way to rebuilding our communities. if there is one thing we have learnt over these past months, communities, lives, local businesses and relationships matters.
Who knows, maybe we can create a better normal than the one we lost!
Be a Good Neighbour
It doesn’t take much to make a difference to someone's life, especially if we all try and contribute in our own way. Here are a few examples of what we could do in order to better the lives of offers around us.
Support local businesses, schools and child care centres
Reach out to neighbours and see if they and their family members are ok
Connect with local volunteer organisations
Give blood
Help promote locals business on community groups, telling people when they reopen
Help the elderly on your street
Some of them have probably had a horrible time not seeing their friends and family. Having a familiar face pop round to offer a helping hand could brighten up their day.
Offer to paint and repair their fence
Offer to take them to the shops
Offer to look clean up their garden
Invite them over for tea
Deliver meals for your homebound neighbours
Gather family and friends and organise a summer songfest or play to perform at a nursing home.
Teach them how to use a computer or the Internet
Support the Homeless and/or Hungry
It frightens me how many homeless and hungry there are in our communities. But perhaps we can all make a little difference and help in any way we can.
Help cook/serve meals at a homeless shelter
Contact your local food bank and ask how you can help. Perhaps running a small fundraiser event is all the help they need.
Have a clear out of your clothes and send them to your local shelter
Gather combs, toothbrushes, shampoo, razors, etc. to make “I Care” kits for people who are homeless
Donate art supplies to the local shelter
Contact your local school and see if they know of any families who are struggling
Look after your Local Environment
As we all start to get back out into the real world and interact within the community, I am sure there will be an amazing buzz about the place. But wouldn't it be great to have the look of the place match the feel of the place?
Clean up trash from a local outdoor space
Organise a hike or nature walk with friends, and bring bags to collect trash along the trails.
Where possible, walk and/or cycle when out and about
Community is everything, especially now. As an estate agent, I have always taken a keen interest in my local community. I am more than just selling properties, I want to do my part to promote my community and to better it too. The lockdown may well be starting to loosen on us but there is still a lot we can do to help get our local streets, towns and centres back on track.
Remember to shop local, care for your neighbours and continue to look after yourselves and your loved ones.
